Guided Tissue Repair

Our team of experts is committed to treating various periodontal issues and diseases. We are proud to utilize the latest, most advanced techniques and treatments to restore your gum and oral health. One of the most advanced techniques our practice utilizes is known as guided tissue regeneration. Regenerative techniques are used to stimulate the growth of new bone. This gives the tooth more support and increases the height of the bone around the tooth.

How GTR Works

Guided tissue repair/regeneration is performed to repair teeth and gums affected by periodontal disease and defects, to help the tooth to regain support and stability. Periodontal disease can cause the hard and soft tissues of your gums to break down, which causes gaps and loosens the teeth held within these gums.

GTR uses a resorbable or non-resorbable artificial membrane to help keep the soft tissue from growing into the gaps and into the site. Thus, slower-growing bone-creating cells grow here instead.

The Procedure

  1. Dr. Marshall Johnson and Dr. Elizabeth Jaynes will open the affected gum in a procedure known as a flap to clean and remove all areas of the bacteria and infection. Then, a membrane will be placed on top of the damaged bone.
  2. Next, once the membrane is in between the gum and the bone, it will provide a space and time for the bone to start healing and repairing itself.
  3. It is important to ensure that you are taking proper, routine care while your mouth is healing. This includes regular visits with our team to ensure that there is proper healing and elimination of all signs of periodontitis.
  4. Once healing is complete, the stitches and membrane will dissolve on their own, or they will need to be removed. In about six months, there will be new bone growth and attachments to help stabilize the tooth or the teeth.
